Focus entirely on the speaker. Eliminate distractions by silencing your phone, maintaining eye contact, and being present in the moment.

2. Show That You’re Listening

Use non-verbal cues like nodding, leaning forward, or smiling to demonstrate engagement. Verbal affirmations such as “I see” or “That makes sense” encourage the speaker to continue.

3. Avoid Interrupting

Let the speaker finish their thoughts before responding. Interruptions can make them feel unheard or disrespected.

4. Reflect and Clarify

Paraphrase what the speaker has said to confirm your understanding. For example:

“So you’re saying that...?”

“What I’m hearing is...”


5. Ask Open-Ended Questions

Encourage deeper conversation by asking questions that can’t be answered with a simple “yes” or “no.” For example:

“How did that make you feel?”

“What are your thoughts on that?”


6. Practice Empathy

Put yourself in the speaker’s shoes and validate their feelings. This builds trust and helps you connect on a deeper level.
